Duff:

Duff in golf generally means a poorly struck shot where the club head does not make solid contact with the ball. As a result, the ball usually flies short and/or in the wrong direction.

Other name: flub.

Depending on the type of mistake made by the player, there are different types of a such shots. It can be a fat shot (chunk), a thin shot, a sky shot, a top shot or a shank.

Consequently, the term “duffer” is used as a slang descriptor of an unskilled golfer.
